Dear Friends,

This month, we shall discuss the 8th Planetary Boundary: Novel Entities. In common parlance, we may call them chemical pollution caused by the release of man-made toxic substances into our environment, but it is not only toxicity but something more that cannot be captured by the term ‘chemical pollution’. This is why scientists decided to use the term ‘novel entities’. Essentially, we are dealing with the release of these toxic substances into the environment. But one may ask, “So what? There are so many toxic substances that occur naturally like salt, kerosene, snake venom etc. Why should we worry?” Let us see why?

Solid Waste Management

Mr. K. Veera Raghava Rao, District Collector of Ramanathapuram along with Ms. Janaki, Regional Director of Municipal Administration visited Market Street, Jetty Street and Agni Theertham on 16th November to monitor the SWM activity. The Collector interacted with the Green Friends on the general working of the project.The visit started around 10 am and ended at 12 pm.

Tamil Name: Tippili
Sanskrit Name: Pippali
English Name: Indian long pepper

Habitat

Scandent or straggling shrubs, sometimes ascending and climbing. Leaves 8 x 4 cm, ovate, acute at apex, cordate and strongly oblique at base, shining above; nerves impressed; petiole 1-3 cm long. Female spike stout, erect; peduncle 1.5 cm long; bracts peltate,orbicular. Male spike to 7 cm long, erect, slender; stamens 2. Berry 2 mm across, glabrous, black or deep red. Home garden training was organized for SHG members of Rameswaram. The programme is sponsored by NRDC, New Delhi. The participants were given the Tool kits for establishing Home Garden in their Residential Area after the training.

Revival and Renovation of Water Bodies Story of Sugriva Teertham

Location and Form

This Teertham is located from Rameswaram Temple towards Gandhamadhanaparvatham. It’s a pond type Teertham with one side stairs


Mythological Story

Sugriva instrumental for his brother Vali’s death acquired the sin of killing his own brother. Lord Rama created this Teertham and sugriva did 9 days of Shiva Pooja near this Teertham and had the darshan of Lord shiva in the form of light.

Heavy Rainfall Response from District Administration in Collaboration with Team Green Rameswaram in Natarajapuram

The aftermath of Gaja Storm effects, heavy Rainfall was witnessed in Rameswaram. During the Rainfall many low lying areas were affected with Water entering the huts especially in Natarajapuram area, 100s of huts and houses were flooded with water. As a response relief materials were distributed with the help of Govt. officials on November 25, 2018.
