Newsletter - August 2020

Read Coverting Letter

Dear Friends,

Our friend from Pune Shri.Santosh Shintre has written a very useful handbook on “Ecological and Environmental Reporting in India” in the year 2013. He writes in his preface……..

“In a country like India with 82,222 newspapers, 312 radio channels, 626 television channels and 700 upcoming FM channels, space and time allotted in the media for coverage of Nature and Environmental issues is less than 1.5%. It is even lesser in the regional media. This results in public apathy, ignorance and inertness about these burning issues, becoming all the more worrisome when the media are the average Indian’s only source for information about environmental issues. Over 80% of the common people in India learn about Nature and Environment related issues only through the print or audio-visual media. Unfortunately, the media in India are as yet not sufficiently empowered to evoke a positive change by prioritizing and communicating issues effectively and imparting to them the much required merit”.

We the workers of Green Rameswaram project totally agree with the views expressed by the author, as even after working for seven years for the project – “Green Rameswaram”, we have not made any significant headway because of the apathy of the public in general and the locals in particular towards environmental issues. However, we are committed to carry out our mission of making ‘Green Resilient Rameswaram’ with a hope that the local stakeholders will join hands in the coming days.

This month’s newsletter has the following highlights:
  • Dr. Sanjay Banerji in his blog writes about Sustainable Development Goal – 8 (Decent work and economic growth)
  • Shri.Paranthamam and Premkumar, REACH Foundation writes on Archaeology of Rameswaram in Tamil
  • Solid waste management work by Hand in Hand Inclusive Development Services, Chennai.
  • Dr.A.Abirami, Programme Officer of C.P.R. Environmental Educational Center writes about the herbal plant – Pappan poondu (Diamond flower)
  • Revival and Renovation of Traditional water bodies – Bhima Teertham and
  • Regular events for building Social capital such as cleaning of Traditional water bodies with the help of partners, webinars and Sis.Saraswathi receiving best social worker award on Independence day from the district Collector, Ramanathapuram etc.

With best wishes,
