Dear Friends,

Relationship between the Inner and Outer

A village is besieged by drought and unless there is rain quite quickly, the village is going to starve to death. They have tried everything they know. They have tried all their local people so they finally decide to send, at a great distance, for the famous rainmaker. The great rainmaker consents to come. He comes to the village and he asks immediately: Please build me a straw hut outside the village and give me enough food and water for five days … and don’t disturb me! They do this quickly. The little hut is built and he disappears into it and on the fourth day it rains, just in time to save the village.

The villagers went to the hut, they drag the rainmaker out of the hut blinking into the light, give him his fee and pour all of the gifts that they can upon him. An enormous outpouring of gratitude for he has indeed saved the village.

One man came to him and said: How do you do it? What is the ceremony that you do that makes it rain? The rainmaker said: Oh! You must understand … you see when I came to your village, I was so out of sorts inside myself that I had to put things right inside myself and I never got to the rainmaking ceremony. For 3 days, all I have done is to put myself in order, then the world will be in order and drought must yield place to rain!

Green Rameswaram team believes in this inter-relatedness of the Inner and the Outer while working for ‘Green Resilient Rameswaram’. Thus spirituality is an important dimension of our development paradigm.

Dear Friends,

This month we shall discuss the 14th Sustainable Development Goal: ‘Life below Water’. In this blog, we shall try to explain:

  1. What it is and why is this relevant
  2. What are its indicators and targets
  3. Where do we stand in India
  4. What can we do to support the goal

As stated earlier, I have little to contribute on my own. I have attempted to provide a few references, so that if anyone is interested in probing deeper, you could do so.

Glory to Lord Siva, who is worshipped in southern region (தென்னாடுடைய சிவனே போற்றி!)

Saivite saint-poet Sri Thirunavakkarasu Perumaan has composed wonderful hymns on Rameswaram in lilting Tamil. This comes as part of the 4th canto of “Thirumurai”, a compendium of devotional songs on Lord Siva.
