Who We Are

Driving eco-consciousness for a greener & prosperous Rameswaram.

The Vivekananda Kendra Natural Resources Development Project, or VK-NARDEP, is Vivekananda Kendra’s pet project, which aims to drive sustainability development through eco-friendly solutions across India.

VK-NARDEP is deeply rooted in Swami Vivekananda’s teachings. We blend traditional knowledge with modern technologies to tackle environmental issues and prioritise sustainable practices to uplift Rameswaram, the pilgrimage destination.

VK-NARDEP as a catalytic agent brought together like-minded people and organizations to form a Green Rameswaram Trust to carry out the work of “Green Resilient Rameswaram Project”.

It was inaugurated by Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam, the son of the soil. We commenced this ambitious project in 2014 intending to transform Rameswaram into a sustainable model town through water conservation, solid waste management, renewable energy, and eco-tourism.

Our project also places significant emphasis on preserving the island’s cultural and ecological heritage while fostering environmentally sustainable livelihoods.

Our Vision

To create a sustainable Rameswaram safeguarded by eco-conscious and culture-loving people. To make Rameswaram a fine example of sustainable living for future generations to benefit from.

Our Mission

To empower the local community by transforming the island into a thriving, clean, and environmentally-friendly town by encouraging sustainable practices, eco-stewardship and eco-friendly livelihoods.

Our Core Principles

Embracing community ownership and encouraging active involvement.
