Dear Friends,
This month and next, we shall talk on Shipping, Aviation and Paris Agreement. Emissions from shipping and aviation could not be assigned to a particular country, and therefore, these were left out, though not completely, of the Paris Agreement. I got interested in this topic through a news item in the UNFCCC website, based upon some discussions that took place as a side event in COP 23. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) are the two global UN specialized agencies that were called upon by UNFCCC, COP1 onward and Kyoto Protocol to devise ways and means to mitigate their emissions. Beginning 2009, both these organizations have submitted their reports to UNFCCC [1].
