From MDGs to SDGs 1
Dear Friends,
In this month, we shall introduce the SDGs, beginning with its evolution. This is a rather large topic, and we shall deal with it in a few instalments as under:
- The success of MDGs provided a clue as to how to implement Sustainable Development, even while the disagreements persisted.
- A Basic Insight: The Doughnut Principle: ‘A Safe and Just Space for Humanity’.
- Three major contributions: SDSN, SRC and Kate Raworth
- Formulation of the ambitious Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2016 – 2030

Solid Waste Management
Door-to-door awareness campaign
Five door-to-door awareness campaigns were conducted in the Municipality viz. Kattupillayar Kovil Street – Ward no: 14 (4th August), Thiruvalluvar Nagar – Ward no: 13 (7th August), Sivagami Nagar – Ward no: 14 (23rd August), Visuvasa Nagar – Ward no: 13 (25th August) and Chettiar Street – Ward no: 03 (28th August). A total of 450 households were sensitized on MSWM through these programmes.

Distribution and Habitat:
Aloe Vera is a succulent plant species that probably originated in northern Africa. Now the plant is also grown in the hot dry regions of Asia, Europe and America. Aloe vera is a stemless or very short-stemmed succulent plant growing to 60–100 cm (24–39 in) tall, spreading by offsets.

Status of Sanitation in Schools functioning in Rameswaram an analysis by Gandhigram Trust
Ramanathapuram district is one among the two Aspiration districts in Tamil Nadu categorized by NITI Ayog. Gandhigram Trust has started a project entitled, “Promoting Sustainability of WASH Facilities and Child Centred Governance in the Schools of Rameswaram”. The project is funded by NSE Foundation, Mumbai. It is a part of ASPIRATION Consortium comprising of seven other projects implemented by different NGOs. NSE Foundation has entered into a Statement and Intent with the Ramanathapuram district administration. The District Collector of Ramanathapuram is the Chairperson of all the NSE Foundation sponsored projects in Ramanathapuram district.

Motivation Camp for Aspiration Project Staff
Aspiration project
From August 16 – 18, 2019 Motivation camp for Aspiration project staff from Rameswaram was held at Vivekananda Kendra Kanyakumari.
25 staff members from Gandhigram Trust, Hand in Hand, Karuna Trust participated.
Following aspects were covered in the training
1) Traditional Physical exercises which aim at inner sustainability and outer
physical health
2) Breathing exercises to streamline and maintain inner equilibrium
