Dear Friends,

This month and next, we shall talk on Shipping, Aviation and Paris Agreement. Emissions from shipping and aviation could not be assigned to a particular country, and therefore, these were left out, though not completely, of the Paris Agreement. I got interested in this topic through a news item in the UNFCCC website, based upon some discussions that took place as a side event in COP 23. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) are the two global UN specialized agencies that were called upon by UNFCCC, COP1 onward and Kyoto Protocol to devise ways and means to mitigate their emissions. Beginning 2009, both these organizations have submitted their reports to UNFCCC [1].

Distribution and Habitat

Gymnema sylvestre (Retz.) R.Br.is a large, stout, woody climbing shrub belonging to the family Apocynaceae. The plant is found in tropical and sub-tropical regions, well distributed in parts of central and southern India and in the southern part of China, tropical Africa, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. The leaves are elliptic and opposite, 2.5 – 6 cm long, flowers are small and yellow in colour; calyx long, ovate and obtuse. Stem is aerial, hard, twinning and branched. The taste of the leaf is slightly bitter and astringent. It also possesses remarkable property of paralyzing the sense of the taste for sweet substance for few hours while chewing the leaves. Hence it is commonly called as sugar destroyer.

3. CGWB Officials Visit to Green Rameswaram Building
Senior scientist from Central ground water board Dr.S.K. Jain, New Delhi, Dr.Mohan Rao and Dr.Subramaniam, Chennai visited Green Rameswaram office on 13 February 2022. They saw the presentation of Green Rameswaram project and had a discussion with Shri.Hegdeji about yoga and how it helps to cure the back pain. Afterwards they visited Dhanushkodi, JataTeertham and Arichalmunai.
